Why do Australians call Australia Oz? Is it in relation to The Wizard of Oz? Is TWOO popular over there?

We pronounce 'Aus' as 'Oz' while thus Aussie and Ozzie are pronounced the same way
Americans seem to insist on saying 'Aus' as 'Os' thus Aussie becomes Ossie and that just sounds silly.
It probably doesn't help that 3/5 Australians can't actually say the word Australia, it sounds more like "Shtraya"
