Australian actor Simon Baker has been nominated for a Golden Globe for his TV series The Mentalist, but Nicole Kidman and Abbie Cornish were snubbed in the film categories.
The George Clooney drama Up In The Air leads the contenders for the 67th annual Golden Globe Awards with six nominations.
Hunter Valley-raised 27-year-old Cornish was considered a solid chance for her performance in Jane Campion's period drama Bright Star.
Kidman, meanwhile, was considered a long shot for her singing-dancing-acting performance in Nine.
The Globes are considered a bellwether for the upcoming Academy Awards, so the snubs for Cornish and Kidman hurt their Oscar chances.
Despite Kidman's snub, the musical Nine finished with five nominations and James Cameron's cutting-edge sci-fi adventure Avatar and World War II saga Inglourious Basterds both have four nominations.
The nominees for best drama are Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious and Up In The Air.
For best musical or comedy, the nominees are (500) Days Of Summer, The Hangover, It's Complicated, Julie And Julia and Nine.
Simon Baker will compete for the Globe in the TV actor drama category against Michael C Hall (Dexter), Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Hugh Laurie (House).
Among nominees for best actor in a film drama are: Clooney, whose character in Up In The Air is forced to contemplate his own life; Jeff Bridges playing a down-and-out country singer in Crazy Heart; Colin Firth as a man considering suicide in A Single Man; Morgan Freeman playing Nelson Mandela in Invictus; and Tobey Maguire for Brothers.
Matt Damon (Invictus), Woody Harrelson (The Messenger), Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds), Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones) and Christopher Plummer (The Last Station) are the five nominees for best supporting actor.
Nominations for best actress in a drama went to Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side), veteran Helen Mirren (The Last Station), Emily Blunt (The Young Victoria), Carey Mulligan (An Education) and newcomer Gabourey Sidibe (Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire).
The supporting actress nominees are Penelope Cruz (Nine), Vera Farmiga (Up In The Air), Anna Kendrick (Up In The Air), Mo'Nique (Precious) and Julianne Moore (A Single Man).
Best director nominations went to Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), James Cameron (Avatar), Clint Eastwood (Invictus), Jason Reitman (Up In The Air) and Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds).
The Globe winners will be announced January 17 and will be hosted by comic actor Ricky Gervais.
