SCHENECTADY -- Two teenagers have been charged with using a pellet gun this morning to shoot out the window of a school bus carrying three pre-k and kindergarten students.
Police said 17-year-old Johnny Chaparro faces five misdemeanor charges related to the shooting, and a 15-year-old whose name is not being released because of his age will have his case handled in family court.
The incident was reported at 8:09 a.m. and took place near the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Craig Street. Police said the bus was on its way to the Fulton Early Childhood Education Center on Eleanor Street. The students were not near the window when it shattered, school district spokeswoman Karen Corona.
Police said officers on the scene heard an air gun being fired, and the sound led to 903 Lincoln Ave,, where Chaparro allegedly was shooting the gun off his back porch.
He was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a city code violation for possessing the weapon, fourth-degree criminal mischief, second-degree reckless endangerment, and third-degree assault for allegedly shooting a 9-year-old in the leg around the time of the bus shooting.
Another bus came to the scene and brought the children to school. Corona said the students parents were notified.
