Pretty sure it meant that the devil (whatever he was called) got Spawn's soul.
So yes, I imagine he would.

See, I had heard that, and also heard when it happens he has to fight his way out of hell and when he gets out its recharged, but its been so long since I've heard that I didn't know it if it was true or not.

The character, as I understand it, has gone througfh several metamorphoses, but back in the beginning (I still have the first 10 issues, bagged and boarded, in mint condition, lol), I am pretty sure that when the counter hit zero Spawn would return to Malebolgia (The Devil)
