Said it many times but I'm going to say it again FINAL FANTASY 7: It still pains me the blind love this game gets. Whats even more annoying is the games biggest fanboys are people who haven't even played the damn thing. Halo 2: It's half a game in a series of games that gets a lot more praise than it deserves. Halo is a solid FPS for a console, probably one of the best however compared to the 1001 FPSs that get released for the PC every year its run of the mill average at best. GTA whatever: I really just don't see what people love about this franchise. I'm not all that wild about driving games and I really hate the glamourizing of crimminal beheviour Super Smash Bros whatever: I think my loathing of this franchise stems from the fact people insist on billing it as a fighting game. As a fighting game its button mashing garbage with no depth whatsoever. If it was billed as a party game I would probably not be so harsh Any and all post SNES takes on Zelda, Mario Kart and Metroid Altered Beast: SHIT when it was released and SHIT all through out the life of the Mega Drive/Genesis. Honestly who puts Altered Beast in with the likes of Revenge of Shinobi and Golden Axe of awesome pre sonic Mega Drive games?

I actually love the game and only played it by accident, I didn't even know the hype that surrounded FF7 until around the time FF9 had come out.
It was the first RPG I ever played, the first PlayStation game I ever played (This or Tomb Raider, I can't remember which), and depending on the last thing, probably the first 3D game I ever played. I enjoyed this games storyline and whatnot. I'd probably only played 1 or 2 games that had a deep storyline like this beforehand. I can understand why people hate it though.
I like GTA's too but won't go into it.
Good list and good thread though, I'll have a think about it and see if I can add anymore.

"Any and all post SNES takes on Zelda, Mario Kart and Metroid" True on so many levels.
Altered Beast. I loved the arcade version, don't think I played the Megadrive one.
Chrono-Trigger, House of the Dead and the game that deserves the tag 'over-rated' more than any over, Pokemon. Red/Green/Indigo/Magenta/Fuckingwhatever.

Final Fantasy 7 is not a bad game however it is nowhere near as good as the people who have never played it think it is.
The basic plot and storyline is Phantasy Star 2
Thier own plot twists just create so many plot holes to the point there are gaping holes in logic
To people who actually paid attention...Aeris does not actually die in the game.
Sephiroth is the most over rated villian in video game history. Aside from being piss weak, his characterization was so cliched I am still in shock how many people have a man crush on this guy.
As for Altered Beast, the arcade version is a classic sega game. The Mega Drive version is garbage. Heck it is basically the Master System version with a few voice clips added. "Ribe from your grabe!"

Chrono Trigger is one of those RPGs that was in short supply due to the fact that it was released before RPGs bcame FF7 cool. So demand will always be greater than the supply which is why it is sought after.
House of the Dead...Virtua Cop with Zombies and VO that you make the characters in Resident Evil laugh or cry. House of the Dead 2 was pretty good but it was a vast improvement over the first one.

The first 5 pokemon games where all awesome and far from over rated.
To me Mario was over rated I just never got into it. I always prefered to sit down and play Sonic on the Sega.

All I ever heard about Pokemon was that it was fun. The fans got crazy with the cards, but the gameboy games were decent enough to ocupy your time when you had nothing better to do. They also involved at least some strategy, though anyone above 5 would know what it is and anyone who got their pokemon above level 90 wouldn't really need it.

The original Zork text game had more on-screen action than Pokemon.
Pick an option, watch the character icon move to the left a bit. How the fuck did that get popular?

How many pokemon are there now? I remember the fuss caused just by adding 1 pokemon into the mix. They seemed to add about 100 at the start of every season of the cartoon after that.

Tekken- Releasing the same game over and over kinda gets on my nerves. It's basically the same game with a few new characters and a crappy "story" type mode each year And the fact that they claim it is "The deepest fighting game" when you can just mash random buttons to win, requires no skill. Although I did like Tekken Tag though.
Superman 64- The fact that one person liked this game makes it overrated.
Primal Rage- Never seen what the big deal was. The moves were repetitive and the special moves were almost impossible to perform.

I'll give it that it is slightly deeper than DOA and its one button counterfest. Compared to Virtua Fighter most games look shallow

Superman 64. It getting past testing makes it overrated. You really have to wonder sometimes if some games were actually play tested And Yes bbsy the Virtua Fighter series is damn good. The only hitch in the series would be Virtua Fighter 3tb on the Dreamcast. That game was terrible, to describe just how Sega were not thinking when they made the game... You have to complete the game just to unlock the game's intro. Which I did in 2 mins 15 secs.

Virtua Fighter. Blocky, slow, boring. Why they keep churning them out staggers me.
And no I'm not having a go, that's my genuine opinion.

Well if you determine VF5 to be blocky then perhaps you are expecting too much from graphics ;D I will admit Virtua Fighter does not have all the bells and whistles of other fighting games. But most 3D fighters are all sizzle with no substance.

I always found Guitar Hero and Rock Band to be EXTREMELY overrated.
I don't see what the hell is so fun about them. Plus it gets on my nerves when the teenagers say that Metallica is their favorite band despite only hearing one song by them off a Guitar Hero game.

LittleBigPlanet - I've got it, I've played it online, I've done all sorts of stuff on it but it's just as 'meh' as when I first heard about it. Not really causing waves for me, don't understand the hype.

I understood their point. When songs they're still recording are turning up on the Net, there's a problem.
Fast forward a few years, I got turned off by their shitty albums.

Hmm, back to topic.

The sims, any of them-What was so much fun about that? you just made a guy built a house and made him live in it. it was ridiculously boring, sure making them play music and screw each other was fun for a while but after a few times it just gets crap. If you could become like a super criminal and rob peoples houses, or become a serial killer and invade houses and juts kill people it would be fun, but for what it was, i was just too bland, you could do just about everything interesting there was to do in the game in a few hours.
Halo 3- Dont get me wrong it was a good game, but it was nowhere near as good as some people seem to think. I think with the incredible hype for the game, when it came out and was nothing better than what we had with the other 2 games, people where just refusing to believe it and bullshitted on about how it was the best first person shooter ever, and all that crap.

The Halo games are good but they fall so very far short of their hype. But to any PC user FPS fan the Halo games are very average at best. Your idea for Sims sounds most interesting especially if it was a MMO type thing where you could go around killing other people's sims. Just to add to the realism, if a sim dies it is erased from your hard drive so it stays dead!
