So they are still celebrating that they have managed to score a record number of deaths, knocking over a 25 year old record.
In 2 and half decades they have learnt nothing! Every freaking time these bush fires break out we have the dinky little helicopters with their tiny buckets in their futile efforts to contain these things.
Every year or so the fed and state government knock back the idea of buying the Canadian and US water bombers which would see Australian with a fleet of 5. 1 each for queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. With the ability to move them interstate as required.
Why don't we have these planes? Because appearently our current counter measures are more than adequate. Tell that to Victoria's still rising record body count.
Yes these planes are exepensive and they are limited in the places where they can take water onboard. But their overwhelming payload of water and fire retardant compared to the chopper bucket of water vapour, would in my eyes be enough to convince sensible minds they were the way to go.

That's really fucked up.
Not even 5, just a couple at first would help out I'm sure. So, these fires spread every year?
How hot does it get over there?

The highest record temp I recall was 52 degrees celcius but that was an extreme case. High 40s during summer are a norm.
After 200 or so years of this shit you think they would have learnt.
I think it was around 2004 that the capital was gutted by fire. If our emergency services could not protect the nation's capital what chance does the rest of the country have.
What is really going to piss me off is that this tragedy will change nothing and in 2011 or 2012 the same shit is going to go down.

that does suck...
The world is going to hell in a hand basket and the World Leaders are too busy putting money in their own pockets. There really is no excuse for shit like that happening.
Then again there was no excuse for the shitty levies in Louisiana either...

Then again I would not be one to live in a city that in living history had previously been destroyed by the same natural disaster.

I think it's very unlikley that he will as well. But theres more chance with him in power then what there ever was with Howard.
Hercules is pretty impressive though and he is really really big. Last year when the bushfires where out of control here in Parkes Hercules and the other chopper I cant remember it's name where both called into action. and they would stop and refuel at the airport and we went out there and watched them and they are very impressive and only one load of water in it's tanks where enough to completley empty a dam on the farmers properties. Of course the farmers wernt impressed when the water for there sheep and cattle was being stolen by a helicopter but I guess it was better hen all there stock being killed in the fire.

When we had fires here they were forced to use the tiny man made lake. Seeing as how we have all these cities with nice harbors wouldn't be useful to have something deliver a mass of sea water rather than tapping local reserves. Flying in from the coast may take longer but how many trips do the dinky helicopters have to make. This is now the ultimate case and point with record death toll that is still on the rise that current methods and equipment are not up to it.

Yeah I know the toll stands at what 130 and is expected to be at 230 tomorrow and they still havent managed to get any of them under control yet so knew equipment and methods are needed badly.

Geography is on my side this time round. Hopefully we won't have another day of politicians hamming it up for the camera talking about what a tragedy this is.

My area is under threat with Two fires within one hundred Kilometers of each side of us but at the moment they are both being controlled and the weather has cooled off but the town just looks like we have fog overtaking the town but it's just smoke.

If the fire reaches us then then half the town is screwed. Since we are mostly farming community we just have paddocks full of dried up crops and dead grass and trees. 10 years of droughts and then fires dont make things very good.

While the debate for arson laws once again comes to the headlines...
May sound a bit extreme but I have always been of the belief...
If they are caught they should face a murder charge for everyone who was killed and an attempted murder charge for everyone who escape and for everyone who risked their lives to fight said fire. Then they can have all their assets seized to assist in paying for the damage.
I wonder how much money is being wasted keeping the one guy they have caught in protective custody.

I think that sounds like a good idea. and the fact that they relit the fires means they intended on hurting these people so they should suffer the full consequences of the law.

Batman would no doubt save the guys worthless life, Moon Knight on the other hand would come up with a horrible punishment to the point where you would almost feel sorry for the arsonist.
