(CNN) -- One day before U.S. President Barack Obama's Canadian visit last week, Canadian fighter jets intercepted two Russian bombers near Canadian air space, the defense minister said Friday. Canadian jets intercepted Russian TU-95 Bear bomber aircraft last week similar to this one.
Canadian jets intercepted Russian TU-95 Bear bomber aircraft last week similar to this one.
"At no time did Russian planes enter Canadian air space, but within 24 hours of the president's visit here ... we did scramble F-18 fighter planes from NORAD in Canada command," Peter MacKay said in a news conference in Ottawa.
The Russian planes were in international waters, about 118 miles (190 kilometers) northeast of Tuktoyuktuk, in Canada's Northwest Territories.
"It was a routine flight over international airspace," Yevgeniy Khorishko, a spokesman at the Russian Embassy in Washington, told CBC news.
NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, is a joint U.S.-Canadian agency in charge of aerospace control for the North American continent.
"As has been done on previous occasions, (Canadian pilots) sent very clear signals that are understood, that (the) aircraft was to turn around, turn tail and head back to its own air space, which it did," MacKay said.
The Russian planes were identified as TU-95 Bear aircraft by NORAD spokesman Michael Kucharek. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend Share this on: Mixx Digg Facebook del.icio.us reddit StumbleUpon MySpace | Mixx it | Share www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/americas/02/27/canada.norad/

Canada showing military muscle backs up my theory that they will seek to re militarize after our so called European allies left Canadian troops in the lurch in Afghanistan. The only country to lend support to Canadian troops was the USA. This will leave Canada more likely to side with the US in future hot zones meaning the Europen Union in all their admin fence sitting BS in justified military action have lost the support of a moderate nation and will have established the seed of rival power houses that being North America and the Europe Union. The english speaking white guys Britain, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand will all be on one side of the fence. Britian is already opposed to a fully united Europe. Australia will follow the USA into any course of action regardless of how stupid it is. New Zealand is never one to leave Australia in the lurch. Canada now that it knows it cannot rely on Europe in a crisis will turn to the one country that answered its call for help.

It's just the way Australia is, they will back up an ally no matter how stupid the action. Its just scarey to think that now the english speaking white guys are in one group...alone.

The next week, "Ok, we're going after Iraq!" GWB was always going to invade Iraq, they were drawing up plans to do so before 9-11 went down. Heck they fired that general who stated that they would need 4 times as many troops as they sent in there. Sadly GWB, Cheney and Rumsfeld had no idea the difference between invading a country and occupying a country.

Yeah cause people are too scared to fall under the 'unamerican card' so you had the wave of intense but still false patriotism. Conservative Americans really do come across as being idiots. You know its bad when McCain actually had to defend Obama in front of McCain supporters.

Still it would have been worth a laugh just to see what would happen if President Palin had been sworn in. Probably would have given rise to the term "PILF"

That's a very insensitive thing to say... how is it insensitive to want to know what a Canadians thoughts are on his countries actions? I actually studied Political Science in university...made me realize that the best thing for me to do was stay out of politics. I appreciate the efforts Canada makes in peacekeeping in places like Afghanistan, but i really don't pay a lot of attention...don't get me wrong, i appreciate the efforts of troops from Canada AND the U.S....i just hate that so many young people die because of decisions made by people who never fight themselves.

Sadly people frowned on the Soviet method of sending in refugees and political troublemakers first. I say for the next war the US starts, the first wave of troops should consist of reality TV 'stars' and any other personality that is famous for being famous. Paris Hilton can be used in some covert op to give enemy troops Herpes. Ever since Ernie Beano turned the Canadian Airbourne into armed psychopaths resulting in various war crimes that resulted in Canada drastically downgrading its military, it has struggled to be relevant. Canadian troops had been fighting alone in Afghanistan for years and had continually stated that their effort could not be maintained if they didn't have support. Their supposed European allies refused to assist as they were too busy running admin. The US then had little choice but over extend its forces to extend the tours for their soldiers already in Afghanistan to come to the aid of an ally who was asking for help. To avoid being left in the lurch again Canada has to build ups its military. Now Canada has also learnt when the shit hits the fan the only country they can rely on is the US. Now we have crap about Russia trying to lay claim to mineral rights in the Northwest Passage, something clearly within Canadian territory if anyone bothered to look at a map. Putin who is still in charge of mother Russia has always wanted to build Russia back up to its glory days. Japan the biggest voice against nuclear weapons now has nukes India and Pakistan...now not the most stable of nations have nukes North Korea after the US negged on it UN deals has nukes Iran now under threat of Israeli attack (They have nukes too) and with the middle east in chaos...is seeking, if they don't have them already, nukes And they actually still wonder how history will judge GWB?
