Goldeneye 007!!! Much better than Halo, I know that. Halo sadly now is dragged down by by the horrid PC version, the half game that was Halo 2 and the overhyped and lack luster Halo 3 I'll give Goldeneye this much that it is possibly the only exception to the auto suck rule of movie tie in games. That in itself makes it an awesome game.

Not to mention that Goldeneye set the standard for FPS games today.
I never did like Halo, I thought it ripped off Perfect Dark too much.

Had Goldeneye been on a better console with hardware that didn't force you to choose between texture or frame rate it really could have been something. As for being game of the year.... So was Thunderhawk and Virtual ON

Just because those two games sucked doesn't mean Goldeneye didn't deserve it. Nothing deserved that award more.
Plus it was the first to bring headshots and zoomable sniper rifles to shooting games.

Have you played Thunderhawk and Virtual ON? Actually in the FPS mode in Top Secret Episode on the NES you could zoom in when using the Sniper Scope And I do believe you could pull off head shots in Virtua Cop as point scoring was different depending on where you shot any given bad guy

Yeah, but Goldeneye made it famous. The headshots and sniper rifle systems were perfect on it (Well probably not PERFECT, but close) I have played Warhawk and I hated it of course I've never liked games like that anyway and I never played Virtual ON. made it famous Oh I don't think so. The likes of Unreal Tournament is what made it famous. Thunderhawk is not Warhawk, at best it would best be described as Maximum Overkill. Goldeneye is a great game for the N64 however the N64 was less than stellar. I will agree it is far more deserving of its praise than the likes of Halo 2 & 3 but I fear its being remembered as being a lot better than it actually was. Kinda like Altered Beast and Mortal Kombat for the Mega Drive these games were shit and they have always been shit yet some people remember them as being gods of the 16bit era.

In this context First Person Shooter

FPS stands for First Person Shooter.
And Cringe, I remember playing Virtua Cop, but the headshot system was crap to me. They just kinda moved a couple inches back and dissapeared. Goldeneye was the first to make it a big part of the game, and I've never played Top Secret Episode but I looked up videos of it on youtube and it did show a zoomable Sniper Rifle, although it was more limited (of course it was good for a NES game) Goldeneye made it famous though. I'm sure that a lot of people haven't heard of the game either because if they did it would have more credit than it gets.
Of course TSE is mainly third person though, that's why I say Goldeneye was the first FPS to have it because it was a complete FPS, TSE only did that for sniper mode.

I say that simply because Goldeneye came out in 1997 and after it was out almost every single FPS had a similar gameplay elements in it and Unreal Tournament came out in 1999. I like Unreal Tournament too though, for PC at least. I also think the next game Rare made after Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, was just as good.

AH but you see you said it was the first I was merely showing you it wasn't. Headshots were important in Virtua Cop in terms of score. Taking it away from FPS there was that barbarian fighting game were a hot to the head was instant death regardless of how much health you had remaining. Okay swinging a sword isn't quite the same was shooting a gun but hitting them in the head was a vital part of the game. Goldeneye did not have the mass market appeal as games like Unreal. As I said previously Thunderhawk and Virtual ON were also game of the year but hey who has played them? Being game of the year does not mean they were a commercial success. Thunderhawk certainly wasn't as it was on the Mega-CD. Goldeneye is still no doubt fondly remembered by the N64 users who were no obsessed with all things pokemon. As it was a great game for a very average console Simple math however I have gotten my hands on 4 copies of Goldeneye for a now grand total of $0. Shit like Pokemon Snap however still relies on out laying of cash. So even people who owned the game still don't hold it in high regard.

Perfect Dark is the perfect example of frame rate or texture. It is not in the same league as Goldeneye
Yes Unreal came out after but it had more of an impact.
Every modern free roaming FPS owes everything to Wolfenstein and Doom for paving the way. However I do believe Corporation came out before them and its basically a simplified version of Doom but hey who has ever played that one.

Greatest 1st person shooter without question.
Greatest game ever? Try MGS. Try GTA4 or San Andreas. Or Resident Evil 4. Much better in terms of gameplay and storytelling

I agree, Goldeneye is the greatest.
It certainly was the first one I gave a shit about. It was such fun and I still like to crank it out and play it on N64.
If only Microsoft and Nintendo would stop being so childish then we could see it on Xbox Live or Virtual Console.

It's a bit late to cash in on the movie and it also depends who has the rights to James Bond. Also Perfect Dark was the spiritual sequel to Goldeneye and its 360 rehashing wasn't anything to write home about.
