The father of two children found dead in the boot of a car said he is unable to comprehend why they were killed.
Harry, three, and his sister Elise Donnison, two, were found in holdalls in the car in Heathfield on Wednesday.
Their father Paul Donnison said: "Their lives have been taken away in the most cruel way. I am unable to understand."
Their mother Fiona Donnison, 43, of Lightwater, Surrey, was arrested on suspicion of murder. She remains in hospital and is yet to be questioned.
Mr Donisson said the family were living in a "nightmare".
"Harry and Elise were the lights that shone the brightest in my life and I am unable to begin to comprehend why this has happened to them. I love them with all my heart," he said.
'Enriched our lives'
"I will never let a day go by without thinking of their beauty and the joy they gave to me in their short lives."
Mr Donnison thanked his family, friends and the police for supporting him.
He added: "I trust justice will be done. But there will be no justice for Harry and Elise and for all their family and friends whose lives they enriched so enormously."
He said: ""These last few days have and will continue to be a nightmare for all involved and I would ask that the privacy of Harry and Elise's family is respected."
Post-mortem results carried out on Thursday showed that the toddlers had been dead for less than 24 hours when they were discovered.
The results showed signs of asphyxiation, although results from toxicology tests were being awaited before the cause of death was known.
Police revealed they had "previous contact" with Ms Donnison and her estranged husband Paul Donnison prior to the deaths, although they would not give details.
Mrs Donnison is under arrest at Eastbourne District General Hospital being treated for self-harm injuries.
Ch Supt Robin Smith, of Sussex Police, said officers were not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.
The car, which was discovered in Mill Close, was towed away for analysis.
