I think I can take it as a warning sign that things will not end happily when the latest batch of contradictory emails from tech support in regard to the whereabouts of my console when they can't even get my name right and always include the phrase "please ignore the previous email."

Sweet! just saying ;D What's even better, in 48 hours I get to have the same conversation again In the 360's defense unlike the PS2 it wasn't released with a fatal software glitch that destroyed the DVD player should you decide to play 1 of 3 launch titles. And being fully aware of the this problem in Japan, shipped the faulty consoles 3 months later to Europe. And then there is the issue of memory cards.
