listverse.com/2007/11/25/top-10-differences-between-europe-and-america/interesting.... and it should be compulsory to learn a language in America, and more than just two or three years. Second language skills need to start at a young age, because that is when it is easiest to learn as well. Its going to be a bitch for me to learn Spanish next year lol. I did take 3 years of French in high school, but that was over 10 years ago and I've had little practice outside of maybe a handful of phrases and stuff retained.

Compulsory to learn a language? Trust me it is a fucking blessing that Americans don't have to learn a second language, I swear its child cruelty. Every time I sit down in that French class I just wanna bash my head repeatedly against the desk until theres no brains left in there to fill with that Godamn language.....And above all else, its been 5 years and i still can't say much more than one fuckin sentence in French!

I know Fake had mentioned the problems with the UK was the language req were there but the selection was poor. I feel that everyone learning a language should have a variety to choose from.

Oh the selection is terrible, Irish is compulsory which is fine, hell I sometimes dream in Irish but then we have to pick between German, French and Spanish. Thats 3 horrible languages to choose from. During the final exams you can do Greek, Latin, Russian and Italian and yet they don't teach them in school, if you want to do the exam your gonna have to learn the language by yourself. Everyone just ends up picking French and regretting the decision with every ounce of their being.

The French are vile creatures who are only useful because they make great deserts and sweets.
And uh they make us take a second language in school even if you already speak one....

So, you're saying they aren't good for that either?
Well, they are decent at sculpting! They have the Awful Tower and that giant bronze lady in New York.

Do you honestly think the Cubans would have allowed such a thing to happen? They would just roll over and let the government stomp on their right to freely speak their language which they so kindly share with the rest of the Spanish speaking world? Here we got either Spanish or Spanish. In college, that's where you get some more choices.

I thought the statue of liberty was copper based, thats why she turned green. Anyhoos maybe they should do another list of European countries that would still exist had the USA not entered WW2.
French is a dead language and they just managed to hobble German now as well. Any European country that has a wave of nationalism that goes as far as to 'purify' the language by kicking out foreign influenced words essentially stifles the evolution of their language.
English on the other hand from a minor Germanic dialect is now the most adaptable language on the planet and will gladly consume any word it likes.

I'm sorry and I know I'm gonna get flamed for this, but I don't think it should be mandatory for EVERYONE to learn a different language. To me, it should depend on what field you are going to. I'm one who believes that its finally time for education to be geared towards what field you are going into, similar to how they do it in other countries apparently(like Germany). I believe by 9th grade the liberal arts education should be through and more vocational-like education toward your field of work is what should be geared more towards, and the tide is already started to turn that way. Here schools are starting academies and stuff trying to get kids more into college and get kids started more into their chosen field.
I'm not saying learning a 2nd language is useless but again, I think it honestly depends on what field you are going in.

Having knowledge of a second language is invaluable no matter which field you enter into to be honest. Even if it's say nursing or investments or sports coaching. Having access to another language opens more doors for employment and development.

It probably can get you more ahead to learn second language. However, from what I've noticed, there are numerous successful people who might have learned a second language but are not fluent in it anymore and it hasn't been detrimental to them in any way i.e. my mother, who has a college degree, studied Spanish I think for two years in college, I doubt she very fluent in it and has probably lost most of that knowledge, and I would say she has had a great career experience throughout her lifetime. Certain skills I think adds more advantage depending on a particular area. Not all of them I think are like reading and math where they can serve a universal advantage(and even math is one of those things where its kinda iffy on if you ask me. Tons of successful career people I know who flat out suck at math.)

Having access to another language opens more doors for employment and development. This is true. I dropped out of Spanish after a week in high school and while it hasn't hindered me, I have encountered a few situations where people have tried to speak to me at work and I couldn't communicate with them. Though, I totally embellish and say I'm fluent in Spanish because I know how to say "Hello, my name is Brandon." in Spanish. At least, I think I do...

The fact is though, if you have the ability to fluently (Or at least confidently and coherently) call on a second language, you can look to work abroad in your chosen field, thus more doors are open to you. Job fields can be flooded in certain countries (Say, like building and plumbing over here, or even firefighting) and it can by nigh-on impossible trying to find employment in that field. If its something you're passionate about and really want to go do for a living the knowledge of a second language would be extremely useful. Countries are always looking for skilled people to bring in. Of course you can learn the second language later if you've found all else fails, but that would take time and perhaps even money that you don't have after investing in a degree.

Of course you can learn the second language later if you've found all else fails, but that would take time and perhaps even money that you don't have after investing in a degree. Thing is though, it depends on the language, and the choice of language is probably the big reason why it isn't taught from say 1st grade up. A lot of people here just assumed Spanish(because Spanish is one of the highest minorities in America), but there are still more languages than that. And yeah ofcourse it can help you if you want to work abroad, if you choose to, that's the big key. I'm not looking in my future to go into Graphic Designing into any other country. I'm one who has never been to another country in my life, I've never had the resources nor financial backing to. And I woudln't be surprised if I don't work in another country at all. Yes there are numerous people who look to work in their field abroad, but there are other people like myself who don't see it as a big priority. I'm not saying I wouldn't want to, but it's not a huge priority. Again, I just think it's another one of those skills that depends. It's perfect and you should learn a second language if you looking to work abroad, but not everyone is looking to work abroad.
